A New Testament Example

On his third missionary journey, after he passed through the upper regions, Paul passed through Ephesus and found twelve disciples of John the Baptist. He asked them a very interesting question. He asked, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They responded by saying they had not even heard about the Holy Spirit or that the Holy Spirit even existed (Acts 19:1-2). In other words, they had no knowledge, no teaching, or no understanding about the Holy Spirit.

Then Paul asked them, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.” Then Paul explained to them John was baptizing people into the belief that the Messiah was coming soon and the Messiah was Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. After their baptism, Paul laid hands on them and the Holy Spirit came upon them and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. (Acts 19:3-6.)

This is another example of New Testament believers receiving the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands separately from the time of their salvation.
