The Gift of Interpretation of Tongues

“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all ... to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills” (1 Corinthians 12:7,10,11).

The gift of the interpretation of tongues is the supernatural explanation by the Holy Spirit of the meaning of an utterance in an unknown tongue that is in an understandable language to the hearer.

“I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification. Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret” (1 Corinthians 14:5,13).

The gift of interpretation of tongues is not the translation of tongues. When a language is written and converted to another language, it is translated. That is where you take individual words and convert them to their counterparts in the other language. This is not the case when interpreting tongues. The person receiving the gift, who may or may not be the person who presented the message in tongues, will speak by the guidance of the Holy Spirit and convey the meaning of the word spoken by the Holy Spirit.

Remember, since the gift of tongues is God to speaking to man, without an interpretation, there would be no purpose.
